Agrometeorology: soil sufficiently moistened almost nationwide
Last week’s heavy rainfall sufficiently moistened the upper layer of the soil almost nationwide, so that the crops sown in the fall are mostly in favorable conditions – HungaroMet Zrt. wrote in its agrometeorological analysis on Thursday.
They wrote: after about a month of dry weather, two major waves of precipitation arrived in the country last week, with 5-10 centimeters of snow falling in several places in the plains since Friday. The amount of precipitation that has fallen over the past 10 days exceeds 20 millimeters in large areas, and even 40 millimeters in the southwest, with less precipitation falling in the northwest of the country.
The surface soil layer, which had dried out considerably by mid-November, has now been thoroughly moistened, with the exception of the Lesser Plain, and moisture has also reached the deeper layers
The temperature varied within quite wide limits: in the northeastern part of the country it was 1-4 degrees Celsius colder, while in the southwest it was 1-3 degrees warmer than the long-term average. In the gloomy, snowy northeastern areas, only values between 2-6 degrees were measured during the day, while in the sunnier southern regions the air warmed up to around 15 degrees.
The rapeseed is well developed and in good condition, thanks to the rainy but relatively mild weather typical of the first half of autumn
However, due to the dry weather from mid-October to mid-November, the upper layer of the soil affected by the root system of the winter cereals has dried out significantly. The cereals sown in early October found sufficient moisture for optimal early development; these stands are typically in the 3-5 leaf stage or are already bushy. Later sowings, primarily in the southeastern part of the Great Plain, have sprouted with difficulty and unevenly, and are lagging behind in development, and the cooler-than-average November does not help them to strengthen, but the abundant rainfall of the past week has helped the situation a lot.
According to the forecast, variable weather is expected
On Thursday, a precipitation zone will move over the country, then showers may still occur in many places on Friday, after which drier air will arrive. The end of the week is expected to be mostly sunny, slightly windy, and mild, and then the tendency to fog will increase from the beginning of next week. The peak temperature is likely to be between 5 and 10 degrees until Monday, then the warming will decrease. On clear nights, light frosts are expected in wind-sheltered areas, but no major cooling is expected for now, they wrote.
