Agrometeorology: dry soil in the Great Plain awaits sowing
The upper 20 centimeter layer of the soil in the Great Plain is critically dry, and spring sowing would need a lot of precipitation, HungaroMet Zrt. announced in its agrometeorological analysis on Thursday.
They wrote: the temperature during the Easter holiday resembled summer, several daily heat records were broken, and then on Tuesday the temperature dropped by 10-20 degrees Celsius, but it still remained around the long-term average. In the first three months of the year, with the exception of the western Transdanubian and northern regions, 30-60 millimeters less rain fell than the long-term average in a significant part of the country, and this deficit is also reflected in the moisture content of the soils. At the end of last year, the soil filled up across the country, but since then only the layer deeper than half a meter has retained its moisture content, the soil near the surface in the Great Plain has been critically dry since mid-March.
The autumn crops are in good condition, developing two or three weeks ahead of normal
Most of the fields of corn plants have already started to grow, and the autumn cabbage rape has yellow buds, and in some places the flowering has already started. However, in the Great Plain, especially in the northern part, there are still patches of inland water, the extent of which is decreasing, but the crops in these patches have died out. Spring sowing in the Great Plain would require additional rainfall, the soil is currently too dry for seedbed preparation and sowing. Many kinds of fruit trees are blooming right now, and the forests are already leafing out, several weeks earlier than usual.
According to the forecast, mostly dry and warm weather is expected
Light rain and showers may still occur until Friday morning, after which dry, warm weather is expected again, which will further dry the soil. From Friday, the temperature will again rise above 20 degrees in a large area during the day, and from Sunday it will be summery warm again, with maximums between 23-28 degrees, and the air will cool down to around 10 degrees at night.
