Sunflowers and corn no longer require additional rain, but the soil in the Great Plain is too dry to sow rapeseed, the National Meteorological Service announced in its agrometeorological analysis on Thursday.

They wrote: the frontal system that arrived at the beginning of the week gradually put an end to the heat and brought precipitation. The amount of precipitation fell was between 5 and 20 millimeters: 20-40 millimeters fell in a large area in the Transdanubia and in the northern part of the Tiszántúl, while in some places in Baranya and in the wide strip of the Békéscsaba-Szolnok-Jászberény-Ózd line, hardly any.

The soil was very wet during the week

The upper 20 centimeter layer is sufficiently wet in most of the country, dry spots remain in the Great Plain; the deeper layers in the Great Plain, especially in Tiszántúl and in the Szolnok-Jászberény region, are critically dry. The temperature was much higher than usual at this time: at the height of this year’s third heat wave, on Sunday, the hottest day of this summer, the air heated up to 37-39 degrees Celsius in most of the Great Plain.

The heat wave at the end of August accelerated the ripening of corn and sunflower

The corn is well developed in many places, the leaves have already started to dry. The sunflower is in the plant drying phase, and well-developed stands are typical. Further precipitation is no longer desirable for either corn or sunflowers. They added: the sowing of autumn cabbage rape has started, the moisture content of the upper layer of the soil is favorable for the preparation of the seed bed, for sowing and for the germination of the seeds in most parts of the country, in the Great Plain there are areas that are drier than ideal. The continuation promises quiet, moderately warm, mostly sunny, early autumn weather with scattered showers, without significant precipitation – they wrote.
