The rains and showers of the first half of the week provided thorough irrigation in many places, but the soil in the southern half of the Danube-Tisza region remains very dry. We must prepare for further precipitation on Sunday and at the beginning of next week, so the drought is expected to ease in the previously drier areas as well – HungaroMet Zrt. wrote in its agrometeorological analysis on Thursday.

According to the analysis, the precipitation that has fallen in the country since Saturday shows very large regional differences, just as there are even eight- to nine-fold differences in the 30-day precipitation totals between areas close to each other. Typically, less rain fell in the southern and southeastern two-thirds of the country than the multi-year average. The surface part of the soil was moistened in many places, but only in a few places did moisture reach the layer deeper than half a meter. The southern two-thirds of the Danube-Tisza region are still in severe drought in many places, and in the Tiszántúl and Mezőföld in many places. The temperature has been 2-5 degrees Celsius above the long-term average in the past week: the nights were mostly mild, only on clear dawns and in areas the temperature dropped below 15 degrees. The maximums in the Great Plain in the second half of last week were above 30 degrees in many places.

Summer crops have been extremely affected by the drought that has been going on since June

The green mass of most of the stands was much less than usual for the season, and the plants began to dry out quickly. In the unirrigated fields, there are large regional differences in accordance with the rainfall distribution: the harvest is very poor in a large area in the central part of the country, but there are regions – mainly in the Great Plain and the northeast – where the prospects are still acceptable. The current rainfall is no longer useful, it only worsens the quality of the crop. The rain was good for the germination and emergence of the already sown rapeseed, as well as for the preparation of the soil of the fields that are still to be sown, although the soil is too dry for work in large areas of the central part of the country.

According to the forecast, rain, showers, and thunderstorms can be expected in many places on Sunday, and then, after a temporary break, the tendency for precipitation will increase again from Tuesday evening

Precipitation between 5-15 millimeters is likely in the next week, so the drought can also be expected to decrease in the previously drier areas. The temperature will continue to be higher than usual at this time of year: maximums between 25-30 degrees are expected on Friday and Saturday, then the temperature will drop a few degrees due to the front passing through on Sunday, but it will still be around 25 degrees on Tuesday.
