Highly variable, initially wintery weather is expected, then spring next week, and the lot of precipitation helps recharge the soils – wrote HungaroMet Zrt. in its agrometeorology analysis on Thursday.

According to the analysis, it has rained several times in the past week, and the total precipitation over the past 30 days has been around average in a significant part of the country. The recharge of the soils with moisture is slow but progressing, so the water has time to seep into the deeper layers. The upper one-meter layer in the southwestern and northern part of Transdanubia, as well as in the northern part of the country, is saturated or close to saturation, but in the Great Plain, a lot of moisture is still missing, especially in the layers deeper than 40-60 centimeters. In the second half of last week, the weather was mild for spring with maximums around 15 degrees Celsius, then colder air arrived from Sunday and by Monday morning, frost had already set in in large areas with temperatures of minus 5 and minus 8 degrees.
The winter dormancy of rapeseed and winter cereals is coming to an end
Their sap circulation intensified in the spring weather at the end of last week. In winter wheat, the freezing at the end of winter and the beginning of spring can cause problems, when the very moist soil freezes in several cycles at night and thaws during the day, which can damage the plant’s roots. The forced dormancy of fruit trees and grapes is also disrupted by the spring weather. Hazelnuts are already blooming in more and more places in the north, the flower buds of the dogwood have burst, but in the southern part of the country, the buds of early stone fruits are also swelling.
According to the forecast, it will be wintery at first, then spring-like weather next week
Snow, sleet and rain are expected on Thursday and Friday, with snow accumulations exceeding 10 centimetres in the north and west. Further precipitation is expected from Saturday to Tuesday, with precipitation exceeding 20 millimetres in large areas expected by the middle of next week, increasing soil moisture and causing inland water spots. After the frosts at the end of the week, temperatures will rise significantly next week, and mild spring-like weather is expected on Wednesday and Thursday, with mostly sunny weather expected, with peak temperatures of 10-18 degrees.
