Cyclone Boris brought significant precipitation and cooling to the area of the Carpathian Basin: together with the rains at the beginning of last week, 100-140 millimeters of rain fell in the west and northwest, while typically 40-90 millimeters fell elsewhere, which exceeds the long-term average for September. In many places, in July and August, there was not as much precipitation as in the last ten days – they concluded.
The drought has ended nationwide by the end of the week
The top 30 centimeter layer of the soil is saturated with moisture everywhere, the top half meter is also completely wet in a significant area, but the deeper soil layer is still dry in most parts of the country. The temperature dropped permanently below the long-term average for the first time since the second half of April, and on overcast, rainy days and areas in the second half of last week, it barely rose during the day compared to the minimum values of around 10 degrees Celsius.
Harvesting of sunflowers and corn already started at the end of August
The often rainy weather of the last ten days hindered the work and worsened the quality of the already poor crop. The drenched soil across the country created favorable conditions for the emergence of already sown autumn cabbage rape, and for sowing in dry weather for farmers waiting for work. According to the forecast, the second half of the week and the beginning of next week will be mostly sunny, dry weather with maximum temperatures of 20-25 degrees Celsius, but at night the temperature will drop to around 5 degrees in places prone to cold. From next Tuesday, the weather will become more changeable again.
