The weather that turned rainy a week ago and the warm weather is good for grain in the phase of grain growth and intensively growing crops, but at this time more attention should also be paid to the protection against fungal diseases, HungaroMet Zrt. wrote in Thursday’s agrometeorological analysis. They wrote that the weather has turned rainy in the past week, rain has come in several waves, and since the beginning of last week, 20-50 millimeters of rain has fallen in a large part of the country.

This quantity in the southeastern and central regions of the Great Plain and the northwestern half of Transdanubia significantly exceeds the long-term average, but at the same time there are areas in the north and east, as well as in the southern part of the country, where less rain fell than usual at this time. In the past week, not only the soil layer close to the surface, but also the upper half-meter layer has become wet in many places, although there are still areas in spots, mainly in the eastern half of the country, where the middle layer is still quite dry.

The temperature in the north-eastern third of the country was around the usual values at this time, while in the south and Transdanubia it was 1-3 degrees Celsius higher

The autumn sowings are two to three weeks earlier in their development than usual: the ear crops are in the grain development phase, the autumn cabbage rape is in the seed formation phase, the stocks are quite rare in many places. Ears and canola in most places find a sufficient amount of moisture in the soil during these water-demanding stages of development. In many places, the rain came at the last moment for the sunflower and corn stocks, and they developed in drought conditions in most parts of the country in the past period. The often sunny and dry weather characteristic of the first half of May was good for the ripening of the early fruits – strawberries and cherries – but the intense showers and downpours are already deteriorating the quality of the harvest.

According to HungaroMet, the latest vegetation index for the second half of May showing the “greenness” of the surface is high for the season

According to the forecast, the precipitation tendency will decrease from Saturday, and only scattered showers, even thunderstorms accompanied by hail and downpours should be expected. In the next week, an average of 5 to 15 millimeters of precipitation is likely, most of which will fall in most places by Friday evening. The temperature does not change significantly: the air typically cools down between 10-15 degrees at night, and values between 23-28 degrees are likely during the day.
