Agrometeorology: soil recharge is slow in the central part of the country

The central part of the country is in great need of further precipitation, because the autumn-winter recharge of the soils here is quite slow, with a lot of moisture still missing from the upper one-meter layer. In recent years, only in late January 2022 was there such a water shortage in the soil over such a large area – HungaroMet Zrt. wrote in its agrometeorological analysis on Thursday.

They wrote that in the past ten days, less than 5 millimeters of rain fell in the central part of the country and in the northeastern part of Transdanubia, while 10-17 millimeters fell in Transtişántúl, the Northern Central Mountains and the southwestern regions. In the past 90 days, the majority of the country – especially in the central and northeastern regions – received less than average precipitation.

In the southwest and in the northern part of the country, the upper one-meter soil layer is also saturated or close to saturation, but in the central part of the country and a significant part of Trans-Tisza region, 60-90 millimeters of moisture are still missing. In recent years, only in 2022, at the end of January, was there such a water shortage in the soil over such a large area. Daily average temperatures have exceeded 0 degrees Celsius in most of the country since last Friday, with a few colder days only in the western part of the country, and overall it was 2-6 degrees warmer than usual for this time of year.

Rapeseed and winter cereals are in a dormant state

In the Great Plain, the deeper soil layers are still dry, at least the upper one meter should be replenished by spring so that there is reserve moisture for the plants next summer. According to the forecast, the rainy weather will continue, and in addition to rain and sleet, snowfall is also expected again. The temperature will continue to be quite variable, from Saturday to Tuesday morning the air will cool below freezing point throughout the country at night, and on Sunday and Tuesday morning frosts below minus 5 degrees will return to the northeast. During the day, the temperature will mostly rise to between 0 and plus 5 degrees, then on Wednesday a significant warming will begin and the nights will be frost-free again, while during the day the air will warm up first in the southern part of the country, and then more and more places above 10 degrees.
