Agrometeorology: the rainy weather favored the development of autumn-sown grain

The mild but often rainy weather of the past two weeks created favorable conditions for the early development of autumn-sown grains, the National Meteorological Service wrote in its agrometeorological analysis on Thursday.

They added that the whole of October was rainier than average only in the north and in the southern part of Transdanubia, and in most of the Great Plain, especially in the southern part, only half or two-thirds of the usual amount fell at this time. In the past two weeks, the near-surface soil layer has become wet over an increasingly large area, the upper 20 centimeters in Transdanubia and the Northern Central Mountains region has become saturated in several places, but it is still dry in Viharsarok. The moisture content of the middle soil layer has also increased, but it is still very dry in the Great Plain, just as not much moisture has reached the layer deeper than half a meter in the majority of the country. In the past week, the temperature continued to be 5-6 degrees Celsius higher than usual at this time, maximums of 17-20 degrees were typically measured, and the air did not cool down significantly at night either.

According to the analysis, autumn harvesting work has already been completed in most places

The autumn sowings needed rain a lot, the canola is very well developed, mostly 6-8 leaf stands are typical. In addition to the heat, the precipitation was also good for sowing wheat, as well as for germination and emergence. Barley is characterized by bushy stands in more and more places, and wheat has 1-3 leaves, sometimes 3-5 leaves, depending on the time of sowing. The weather will continue to be rainy, and a slow cooling will begin. In the week ahead, 15-35 millimeters of precipitation should be expected, with more likely in the north and west, and less in the south and east. The temperature of the hottest hours will typically be between 12 and 17 degrees, and ground frosts will not be rare next week.
