Ministry of Agricultural: the esteemed agricultural sector is capable of producing quality products
In addition to maintaining its traditional values, the Hungarian agrarian society is able to supply the population with sufficient, high-quality and safe food while enjoying the support of the government, in the face of the challenges of the new times – said Sándor Farkas, the Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture (AM), at the 60th Economists’ Wandering Assembly in Szeged.
According to the statement issued by the AM on Friday, the deputy minister spoke at the meeting of the food safety section regarding the expanded task and powers of the department, stating that in addition to agriculture and the food industry, the supervision of trade, the coordinated and interdependent operation and development of these areas also strengthens the safety of the food supply. In addition, the challenges and difficulties of the past six months and the responses to them have proven that agriculture and the food industry are strategic sectors. Sándor Farkas welcomed the fact that the role of agriculture has increased in value, its social recognition has increased and it has a significant effect on retaining the rural population. He said: in addition to the developments of the last ten years, the deputy minister called secure living, technological development ensuring rising profitability, generational change, development of vocational training and irrigation development essential. Regarding the latter, Sándor Farkas called the reduction of irrigated areas from 300,000 hectares to around 100,000 hectares a common failure of the governments following the regime change. That is why the Ministry of Agriculture supports the establishment of irrigation communities and is doing its best to put a long-term irrigation strategy on the government’s table as soon as possible. He explained that Hungarian agriculture has enormous potential. By making use of our natural resources, using our traditions and expertise, together with the support of the government, we can overcome the difficulties caused by the Russian-Ukrainian war, just as the drought that returns from time to time is not unknown and insurmountable for those working in agriculture – emphasized the deputy minister.
