Minister of Agriculture: Hungarians’ bread will be guaranteed in 2024
Bread always and everywhere carries the message of safety, future and survival. However, for us Hungarians, it is a self-evident metaphor of life. Hungarians’ bread is guaranteed this year as well – Minister of Agriculture István Nagy announced on Thursday in Somogyvár, at the Carpathian Basin Wheat Merger Festival, according to a statement from the Ministry of Agriculture (AM).
The head of the ministry said that thanks to the workers in Hungarian agriculture, the harvest was successful again this year, which is why we owe thanks for the work done, for standing up and for perseverance.
Compared to previous years, the harvest ended with an average harvest. With regard to summer-harvested plants, in addition to our own needs, a significant export commodity base of several million tons has also been formed. In this year’s winter wheat area of more than 864,000 hectares, the national average yield reached 5.8 tons/hectare. This slightly exceeds the crop averages of last year and the last five years. The highest averages were reported from Baranya, Tolna and Vas counties. Based on the yields per hectare and the area, almost 5 million tons of wheat were grown this year, which more than covers the annual domestic consumption of around 3 million tons.
The food-grade crop is also sufficient to meet the domestic annual grinding needs of around 1.1 million tons, the minister said.
