Minister of Agriculture: sustainable agriculture and forestry play a prominent role in the fight against climate change
Sustainable agriculture and forestry play an outstanding role in the fight against climate change, in maintaining biological diversity and in protecting nature, and through this in preserving the values of the created world – said Minister of Agriculture István Nagy on Wednesday at the end of the academic year of the University of Sopron and at the graduation ceremony of the Faculty of Forestry Engineering – according to his statement.
The head of the ministry reminded us that our forests not only represent an economic interest, but also contribute to the health and well-being of our environment, since the forest belongs to the people. That is why one of the government’s priority objectives is to increase forest areas, namely to increase the amount of wooded areas in Hungary to 27 percent by 2030. He added that within the framework of the National Afforestation Program, the forests have grown with more than 184 million new trees in the past five years, so the size of the area covered with forest tree species already exceeds 2.3 million hectares. István Nagy emphasized that the Faculty of Forestry Engineering of the University of Sopron trains professionals who are able to work in the spirit of sustainability and innovation in the field of forest management. Their expertise and knowledge are greatly needed in domestic forestry, and their diploma ensures that they can start working quickly and actively contribute to the preservation and sustainable management of forests. He added that future professionals hold the key to the conditions under which the next generations will live. The increasingly rapidly changing new challenges also affect the field of forestry, the solution of which requires both new knowledge, new enthusiasm and new forces, complemented by the continuous exchange of experience between professionals. That is why the Minister of Agriculture István Nagy asked the university’s graduates not to forget their alma mater and to strive to improve the reputation of the University of Sopron in their work – explained the announcement of the Ministry of Agriculture.
