Chamber of Agriculture: 10 percent more new wine was produced this year than last year
About 2.9-3 million hectoliters of new wine were produced from the grapes harvested this year, which is 10 percent higher than last year’s level, which is around the average of the past ten years, according to the overview prepared by the National Chamber of Agriculture (NAK) and the National Council of Mountain Communities.

According to their statement sent to MTI on Tuesday, the harvest took place without any problems. Thanks to the dry summer weather, the harvest was healthy and of extremely good quality, with a quantity of approximately 410-430 thousand tons. They highlighted: the golden yellowness of the grapes has not yet affected the harvest, and there is no visible crop loss in the most affected wine regions compared to previous years. The diseased vines detected this year still produced fruit in this harvest, but will not next year. The epidemic-like spread and the accelerated infection rate have created a crisis situation, and next year, most of the affected areas will have to be cut down.
The time required for the vines to start producing after replanting is primarily influenced by the amount of precipitation
In consecutive drought years, the vines develop slowly, and the new plantings to start producing can take up to 6-7 years with continuous capital replenishment. This means that crop losses must be expected in those wine regions where phytoplasma infection is more significant – they wrote. They explain that Hungarian wine is also an excellent choice for a Christmas gift, light, fresh, fruity wines, as well as sparkling products, have become more popular on the Hungarian market in recent years, and the consumption of products with reduced alcohol content is increasing among young people. At Christmas, more expensive, more special wines come to the fore. And although the end of the year primarily increases the demand for sparkling wines, the turnover of wines also increases at this time – they said.
