The producer price of red onion remains well below last year’s
According to KSH data, the yield of red onions in the last five years ranged between 38.5 and 58.2 thousand tons. In 2023, it produced 13 percent more red onions (58.2 thousand tons) than a year earlier. According to experts, this year, the area of red onions in Hungary expanded to 1,755 hectares (+24 percent) compared to last year.

According to KSH data, Hungary’s red onion imports decreased by 14 percent to 8.53 thousand tons in the first seven months of 2024 compared to a year earlier. Slovakia delivered 24 percent (1.33 thousand tons) and Germany 36 percent (427.8 tons) less red onions to our country. At the same time, 8 percent more red onions (3.56 thousand tons) and 55 percent more red onions came from Austria (1.51 thousand tons). Hungary’s annual onion export is not significant (1-2 thousand tons).
In the first seven months of this year, exports fell by 60 percent to 286.2 tons, the majority of which went to Romania and Austria
According to AKI PÁIR data, the Budapest Wholesale Market 2024 1–15. The producer price of free-range brown-skinned red onions was 16 percent lower (HUF 266/kilogram) than a year earlier. The producer price of red onions with brown skin harvested this year (HUF 195/kilogram) 2024 24–41. per week was 47 percent below the average price of the same period in 2023.
