Tokaji is the most popular wine region among Hungarians
Among the Hungarian wine regions, Tokaji is the most popular among Hungarians –– this is revealed by the online survey by Csodásmagyarország.hu. The Eger wine region came in second place, while Villányi was in third place. The Balaton-felvidéki and Badacsony wine regions shared fourth place in the ranking, while Szekszárd came in fifth. The majority of respondents are primarily attracted to a wine region by the proximity to nature and the excursion opportunities, but many are attracted by wine tastings and cellar visits, as well as wellness services and gastronomic programs.
The Tokaj wine region is the number one favorite of Hungarians, according to an online survey conducted by Csodásmagyarország.hu with 1,658 participants in November 2025. 23 percent of respondents voted for the World Heritage region. The Eger wine region came in second place with 16 percent, while the Villányi wine region came in third with 15 percent. The Balaton-felvidék and Badacsony wine regions share fourth place with 7 percent each, and the Szekszárd wine region came in fifth with 5 percent. They are followed by the Mátra and Balatonfüred–Csopak wine regions (4 percent), then the Balatonboglár wine region (3 percent). The Mór and Sopron wine regions are in ninth place with 2 percent each, and the Neszmély wine region is in tenth place, also with 2 percent.
The natural environment is the most attractive thing about a wine region
Visiting wine regions is mostly encouraged by the natural environment and the opportunity to go on excursions – this option was chosen by 22 percent of those participating in the survey. This is followed by wine tasting and cellar visits with 20 percent, followed closely by wellness services with 19 percent, and gastronomic experiences with 18 percent. Cultural attractions such as museums, exhibitions, castles and chateaux motivate 8 percent of respondents, while gastronomic events (such as vintage festivals) move people 7 percent and larger events and festivals 6 percent.
White wine takes everything
The research also examined the wine consumption habits of Hungarians. According to the results, most people prefer white wine (43 percent), followed by red wine (30 percent) and rosé (16 percent). Champagne reached 5 percent, sparkling wine reached 1 percent, while 5 percent of respondents do not drink wine at all.
Preferences differ little by age group, with red wine coming in first place only among those over 65.
The top list of specific wine types is led by Aszú (16 percent), followed by Olaszrizling (11 percent), Merlot (10 percent), Bikavér (9 percent), and Cserszegi Fűszeres (9 percent), also with 9 percent.
Tourist attractions in the award-winning Tokaj wine region
The Tokaj wine region, which tops the list, awaits visitors with a number of exciting programs. Local winemakers introduce the vineyards with scenic walks, but special wine buses also depart for those who would like to taste special wines or take part in an intimate wine dinner. The vineyards can be explored on foot, by bicycle, by four-wheel drive, or even by Segway, so everyone can find the most interesting way to explore.
The wine region’s settlements – such as Tokaj, Tarcal, Mád, Tállya, Tolcsva, and Erdőbénye – beckon with captivating vineyards and friendly cellars. It is worth visiting the underground cellars of Hercegkút, where the beauty of the landscape and traditional winemaking offer a unique experience. The history and secrets of the wine region are revealed in the Tokaj World Heritage Wine Museum, while the special tasting experience at the Borecet Manufactory in nearby Bodrogkeresztúr completes the discovery.
