TikTok conqueror: Dubai chocolate craze at Lidl
As the Christmas holidays approach, there is an increasing demand for a truly special sweet. Dubai chocolate, which has already appeared on Lidl shelves, is already considered the hit sweet of this season. Given the huge demand, the supermarket chain was forced to introduce a purchase limit: a customer can take home a maximum of two boxes of this exotic delicacy.
However, the sweet is not a cheap product: a 100-gram package costs 2,499 forints at Lidl, which is almost 25,000 forints per kilogram. For comparison: a similar chocolate is also available at rival Aldi, where a 90-gram bar costs 1,499 forints, and a smaller 30-gram one costs 499 forints.
TikTok and the world conquest of Dubai chocolate
Social media influencers are largely responsible for the Dubai chocolate craze, who outbid each other in their TikTok videos to promote the special sweet. The posts featuring the creamy treat are viewed by millions around the world, so it’s no wonder that the sweet has become an international hit in no time.
But what is this special chocolate that has caused such a stir? The Dubai chocolate is filled with a mixture of pistachio paste and knafeh. Knafeh is a traditional Mediterranean Arabic dessert that consists of melted cheese combined with crispy kataifi dough. The whole thing is poured with a sugary syrup, which is often flavored with rose water. Thanks to the chocolate’s unique texture, it is crunchy, sticky and stretchy at the same time – this combination is what makes it irresistible.
