Tesco has also submitted its food waste reduction plan to the Food Rescue Center
Tesco has been measuring and publishing its food waste data for five years in a unique and voluntary way in the retail sector. Thanks to years of conscious monitoring, prevention and reduction of food surplus and waste, the store chain has achieved outstanding results. Compared to the base year of 2016/17, the company has reduced its food waste by 69 percent so far.
When we throw away food, all the energy and water used to produce, transport and package it is also lost. Food waste therefore increases emissions and accelerates climate change. Although international research accounts for only 5 percent of all food waste, retailers have the opportunity to reduce food waste if they are aware of how much food surplus is generated in their operations and how they can recover it. For five years now, Tesco has been measuring and publishing data on food surpluses and waste from its operations, enabling it to reduce food waste by 69 percent during that time. In doing so, it continues to exceed the level set out in point 12.3 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals for Sustainable Development (UNSCR) on food waste halving, which it has already achieved in 2020/21.
