Tesco’s food rescue heroes reduced the company’s food waste by 73%
In its recently published ninth food waste report, Tesco reports a 73% decrease in waste generated by its operations. At the same time the retail chain increased the amount of food donated to those in need by 7% compared to the 2016-2017 base year.
According to data from the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih), Hungarian households generate 62kg of food waste per person a year and from this 25.8kg could be prevented – a loss of HUF 380 billion for the population. Even more is lost along the food chain from farm to table and this is the reason why Tesco has been working to curb food waste for many years.
1,200 truckloads of food for people in need
According to the latest data, only 0.71% of the food sold by Tesco has ended up as waste, which means that the company has cut food waste by 55% compared to the base year, through measures such as forecasting and ordering procedures and price discounts on products nearing their expiry date. “In just one year we have managed to save more than 65% of edible food waste, which is equivalent to 1,200 truckloads of food or nearly 8.7 million meals. Our colleagues are the engine of Tesco’s food rescue programme”, says Nóra Hevesi, head of communications at Tesco-Global Zrt.
Heroic acts on a daily basis
Every day Tesco employees play a key role in making sure that as many donations as possible reach those who really need them. For example every day Mónika carefully sorts fresh and dry goods that can be saved in the Tesco store in Debrecen. Erika plays a leading role in food rescue in Békéscsaba and enthusiastically teaches her colleagues about effective methods. Gergely has been working at Tesco for almost 20 years and is able to put his experience in various areas of the business to good use in the food rescue programme. He delivers the rescued dairy products from the Érd store to the local Social Care Centre. “The Hungarian Food Bank Association has been our strategic partner in running the programme for 12 years, and we also work with the Hungarian Interchurch Aid”, adds Nóra Hevesi.
Tesco is the only retail chain in Hungary that has voluntarily published its food waste data every year since 2016-2017. Tesco sold 560,260 tonnes of food in Hungary in the 2024-2025 financial year, from which 8,690 tonnes were surplus. Since 2016-2017 Tesco has saved 41,231 tonnes of food through charitable donations.
