Glass powder designed to preserve product hygiene was presented
LG Electronics’ (LG) advanced materials business has introduced a new antimicrobial glass powder called PuroTecTM. The innovative material was designed to preserve product hygiene and has a wide range of uses.
The name of the material comes from combining the words Pure (pure), Protect (protection) and Technology (technology). PuroTec, which has anti-fungal and antibacterial properties, prevents the spread of microorganisms and associated odors. Glass powder can be incorporated into various materials such as plastics, paints and rubber. The durable antimicrobial material is chemically stable and tolerates temperature fluctuations well, and does not discolor.
LG first started developing antimicrobial glass powder in 1996 and now holds about 219 patents related to the production and application of glass powder. The company manufactures the antimicrobial glass powder at the LG Smart Park in Changwon, South Korea, which has an annual production capacity of 4,500 tons. This year, the company will expand sales of glass powder to major Asian markets such as China, Vietnam and India, and expects a turnover increase of more than 700 percent annually.
