Sour cream is also a luxury for many
In the past year, the market for milk and milk products was significantly affected by inflation, as a result of which consumption decreased to an extraordinary extent. According to Zoltán Harcz, managing director of the Milk Product Council, people increasingly prefer own-brand, cheaper dairy products, which has rearranged consumer habits both in our country and in Europe, according to the Agrárszektor article.
According to domestic statistics, although sales of 2.8% UHT milk and natural yogurt increased in 2023, sales of other categories such as butter, butter cream, cow’s cottage cheese, processed cheese and sour cream decreased significantly compared to 2022 data. At the same time, the import market also underwent changes; in particular, the import of cheese and canned milk increased significantly, mainly with products coming from Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
The transition from organic products to more traditional, cheaper dairy products reflects changes in consumer preferences. Zoltán Harcz emphasized that consumers are primarily looking for large-packaged, reasonably priced products, which raises the importance of conscious consumer behavior and the fight against consumer deception. This is especially true in the field of imitation products made from vegetable raw materials, where greater emphasis must be placed on informed customer information and transparency.
