Service charge is not a tip – here’s the difference between the two
There is often great uncertainty as to whether the service charge, which is now almost universally used, is the same as a tip, and whether it is necessary or appropriate to give an additional tip if it is charged. There are many differences between the payment methods, including the method of taxation and the voluntary nature of the tip. The national competition authority recommends that consumers think carefully about who they want to reward with their tip and decide accordingly.
Service charges are increasingly common on restaurant menus. Consumers may have many questions about this extra item. Is it the same as a tip? Is it mandatory to pay it? If a service charge has already been charged, is it necessary to give a tip as well?
A service charge, or less commonly called a service charge, is a legally defined type of income for a restaurant, which can only be used to pay employees’ wages. This extra fee is not only for the server in question, but also for all employees working there. The service charge is freely determined by the restaurant, but it must be indicated on the menu and other information surfaces. Payment of the service charge is not optional; the consumer must pay it. Its advantage is that, due to its preferential taxation, it can contribute greatly to the fair wages of employees.
A tip, on the other hand, is a voluntary benefit, the amount of which is determined by the consumer. This way, the guest can express his appreciation and gratitude for the server’s work. However, it is very important how the tip is paid, as this also affects its taxation and may even lead to the server not receiving any benefit from it.
