REWE to cut CO2 emissions in product chain
Rewe Group is taking action by applying its environmental activities to cutting CO2 emissions in the product chain.
The German retailer starts a pilote
project about decresing carbon footprint together with WWF,
Öko-Institut, Potsdam-Institut zur Klimafolgenforschung and
Thema1. In the first fase specialist choose several products and
research their nowadays carbon footprint, a measure of the exclusive
global amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases
emitted by a human activity or accumulated over the full life cycle
of a product or service. In the second fase of the pilote projekt
specilist are looking methodes to reduce carbon footprint. They will
exame the cost and efficiency. The first datas come this year in
November, than Rewe make decision about introducing a carbon label as
in UK. Company plans to use the carbon footprint information by
supply and sale politics in the future.
A carbon label, which shows the carbon
footprint embodied in a product in bringing it to the shelf, was
introduced in the UK in March 2007 by the Carbon Trust. Examples of
products featuring their carbon footprint are Walkers Crisps,
Innocent Drinks, and Boots shampoos.
