The ‘beauty’ of the trade
Confectioners’ Product Competition and Show was one of the main attractions at the 16th UKBA International Trade Fair for Confectionery, Bakery and Gastronomy. Junior confectioners were awarded in the cake decoration category: Viktor Vass and Melinda Kozma won gold medals. Adults only competed in the artistic category and the winner was Ádám Sós from Slovakia; Krisztina Murvai and Krisztina Rózsa were also awarded with gold medals. At the exhibition, the Hungarian bakers’ national team made a 2.5-metre ‘Europe’s breadbasket’ from several different types of bread and bakery products. In February at the Sigep trade fair in Rimini Miklós Jankó, Zoltán Takó and Roland Tukacs won the main prize, finishing first in 3 of the 5 categories. According to Roland Tukacs, the way forward is to return to artisan traditions, but for that bakers have to know the ins and outs of their trade. The Hungarian Bakers’ Association organised its Decoration and Product Competition in three categories: bread, bakery product and decoration. In the latter Zoltán Takó from Pápa was the winner, while among students Zsófia Polhammer and Zoltán Bohus finished first. Lajos Kopcsik is not only well-known in trade circles, but all over the country. The 55-yaer old master made his first decoration work in 1960 and won 10 gold medals for 10 cakes at the Berlin Olympics. At this year’s UKBA he exhibited his new-style works which are inspired by his two hobbies: fine arts and music.
