SPAR completing largest acquisition in the sector
According to Zsuzsa Laber, communications director of SPAR Magyarország Kft, sales targets were met in 2008, though precise figures are not available yet. SPAR completed the largest acquisition in the Hungarian food sector last year, by taking over 174 Plus stores. 13 new SPAR supermarkets were also opened in 2008 and another 4 plus stores were under construction. 8 SPAR supermarkets were also modernised. The total number of SPAR units almost doubled in 2008. Their second logistic centre was opened in August 2008. This 47 000 square meter facility with 600 employees has been the biggest investment project completed so far. The production capacity of their meat processing plant opened in 2005 was also expanded last year. Their business policy of offering an assortment of over 30 000 quality products remained unchanged in 2008. SPAR remains committed to a customer focused service culture. A substantial part of their assortment is composed of quality products of Hungarian origin. In 2008, SPAR and the Agricultural Marketing Centre embarked on a joint project to promote products with the Excellent Hungarian Food trademark. The number of products sold under the „S-Budget“ private label was 140 at the end of 2008.
