Athletes love the ToTu range
More and more people are aware of the importance of a proper protein intake in staying healthy. The consumption of sufficient amino acids – both in quantity and quality – is essential to maintain several capabilities of the body.
“Many people keep track of their nutrient intake. Whether it is the amount of protein, carbohydrates, fat, water or calories consumed per day, people try to quantify these when dieting or changing their lifestyle. The importance of protein is demonstrated by the fact that people generally set a minimum target for the amount of protein. It makes a difference which protein source we choose, as the utilisation of proteins from different sources in the human body can be significantly different”,
says food engineer Dr Csaba Németh.
The biological value of food is an indicator of how well our food is utilised. From natural protein sources breast milk and eggs (100) have the best bioavailability. However, other animal sources of protein are also very good, be it cow’s milk (88-95), beef (88-92), fish (80-92), pork (84), chicken (82) or even cheese and yoghurt. For vegetable protein sources this value is less favourable, even though there may be marked differences. For example, soy protein (74-78) has a much more favourable protein digestibility than corn flour (49). Human food consumption is often more about taste, smell and colour than nutrient content. Sometimes we see that healthy foods can’t really compete with sweets that aren’t exactly protein-rich. Luckily today new and health-conscious food innovations are launched on a daily basis.
“The variety of protein-rich diets is also beneficial for athletes, as amino acid intake in the right amounts and composition are essential for building and maintaining muscle mass. Egg protein-based products, which include dairy substitutes such as a cottage cheese alternative, are also fat and carbohydrate-free, so they can help athletes support their competitive weight as well as their fitness”,
concludes Dr Csaba Németh. (x)
