Red Bull set a record at the Hungaroring
Defending title and two-time world champion Max Verstappen, the Dutch driver of Red Bull, won the 38th Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring on Sunday.
It was the 25-year-old driver’s ninth race win of the year and the 44th race victory of his career, and Red Bull could celebrate its 12th victory in a row, breaking McLaren’s record of 11 victories set in 1988.
Behind Verstappen, who also won at Mogyoród last year, Lando Norris, the British driver of McLaren, finished second, and Sergio Pérez, the other Red Bull driver from Mexico, finished third. Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), who started from pole position, finished fourth. Verstappen’s advantage at the halfway point of the season thus increased to 110 points in the overall standings over Pérez.
Hamilton didn’t catch the start perfectly, and Verstappen, who started next to him, took advantage of this and took the lead in the first corner. Hamilton was apparently upset by the wrong start, after the third turn he was only fourth, because both McLarens overtook him. After one lap, Verstappen, Oscar Piastri, Norris were on the podium, followed by Hamilton and the two Ferraris – Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr. in that order.
