P&G Announces New Global Commitment to Reduce Plastic
When P&G announced our Ambition 2030 sustainability goals in April 2018, we included several global goals for packaging, including 100% recyclable or reusable packaging by 2030. Today, Shailesh Jejurikar, Global President Fabric & Home Care Sector and Executive Sponsor, Global Sustainability, announced an additional company commitment during the Walmart Annual Sustainability Milestone meeting in Arkansas.
This is an ambitious goal we will achieve via light weighting, increasing our use of recycled plastic, driving conversion to more concentrated product forms (e.g., Tide PODS), and when it makes sense, using alternative materials. We estimate this will avoid the use of over 300,000 tons of virgin plastic.
P&G Brands Lead the Way
Our Fabric care, Home care and Hair care brands are helping change the game with significant commitments to increase the amount of recycled plastic (PCR) in laundry, shampoo, and dishwashing bottles.
P&G Fabric Care Brands in Europe have 25% PCR in Ariel bottles and 50% in Lenor core business as well as in Unstoppable bottles.
Today, 73% of P&G Fabric Care packaging in North America (including Tide, Gain, Downy) is recyclable. We are accelerating our progress to make over 99% of our NA Fabric Care packaging recyclable by 2023.
P&G Hair Care brands in Europe like Head & Shoulders, Pantene and Aussie have increased PCR levels to 25%.
Over 1 million bottles of Head & Shoulders Beach Plastic bottles have been produced around the world since 2017.
In Europe, Fairy dishwashing liquid is now using 25% PCR in clear bottles.
Fairy Ocean plastic bottle has expanded from the UK into Germany, Spain, Belgium and Turkey for a total of 3.2 million bottles.
Dawn dishwashing liquid in North America is now using 35% PCR in clear bottles.
Mr. Proper and Viakal brands in Europe will go from 20% PCR to up to 70% in bottles by 2020. Mr. Clean in North America is already using 25% PCR in bottles.
Our work will continue to focus on all 3 R’s (reduce, reuse, and recycle). There are many pilot projects underway at P&G to develop and test new products and new packaging solutions that will accelerate our progress and bring us closer to our global goal of reducing plastic waste.
