”Anonymous fear” is the greatest enemy of Hungarian and Central European youth
The National Youth Council presented the second, English-language publication of its professional book series entitled “Our unknown friends – the young people”, launched in 2022, during the European Year of Youth. The volume is based on the organization’s previous study volume, “Wish for Ten”, and discusses in detail ten crises that have a strong impact on the lives of new generations, determine their circumstances and shape them into a generation. The volume discusses, among other things, what happened to the communities of young people after Covid, or why conspiracy theories gained ground among the youth as well.
In recent years, a number of scientific publications and expert speeches have written about many generation-shaping effects affecting youth, such as the coronavirus epidemic, the Russian-Ukrainian war or the information revolution. The changes undoubtedly influence the social environment, thus shaping the identification as well. According to the “Kívánj tenzet” study published this year, the most pressing problems of young Hungarians were “anonymous fear”, uncertainty, and an unpredictable future, which causes difficulties for every fourth young person (23%). Financial difficulties, impoverishment and poverty (22%) were mentioned as the second problem in the order, but with a similar magnitude. Also on the podium is aimlessness, i.e. not knowing what they want (12%).
The latest study volume of the National Youth Council, published in English, entitled “Hard times create strong youth”, presents the situation and problems of Hungarian and Central European youth in an international, European and global context. large-scale youth research has already become available to the international scientific community. The study reveals the challenges affecting young people by examining ten critical problem areas.
