Migros CoffeeB machines: a zero waste solution
The Swiss company Migros presented its latest coffee technology, the CoffeeB machine, which uses the promising coffee balls to take a revolutionary step against the significant waste problem of capsule coffee consumption.
The CoffeeB machine uses coffee balls instead of traditional coffee capsules, which are filled with a tasteless and colorless seaweed-based layer. As a result, the machine completely eliminates the use of capsules, producing zero waste while using compostable materials. This solution could offer a promising alternative to an industry that generates 100,000 tons of waste annually.
The CoffeeB machine was developed based on the research work of Dr. Caroline Siefarth, which includes five years of research. The tasteless and colorless coffee balls packed in a seaweed-based layer, produced by Migros as the only manufacturer, can be composted. The machine is currently on the market in Switzerland, and the product price is 28,500 HUF, while the price of the 9-berry “capsule” package is 1,700 – 1,800 HUF.
