Mars unveils “accelerated, affordable and achievable” Net Zero Emissions Roadmap to reduce emissions by 50 percent across value chain by 2030
Mars Incorporated today released the Mars Net Zero Emissions Roadmap, a firm action plan that aims to achieve net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the entire value chain by 2050. The Mars Action Plan includes a new target, revised by the Science Based Targets Initiative, which would reduce emissions by 50 percent by 2030 from a 2015 baseline and target net zero emissions by 2050 leading way.
The company’s emissions peaked in 2018 and – compared to the 2015 baseline – it reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 8 percent in absolute terms, or 2.6 million tons, while achieving a 60 percent increase during this time.* The action plan as part of this, Mars will invest more than $1 billion over the next three years and remains committed to providing additional financial resources as needed to achieve Net Zero. Mars is taking immediate steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across all its businesses. The goal is to ensure a better, more sustainable future, from the farms where food is grown for people and pets to the animal hospitals where pets are cared for. The term Net Zero refers to a state where greenhouse gas emissions are significantly reduced while ensuring that all other non-eliminable emissions are adequately offset by removal.
The roadmap was drawn up following the recent findings of the UN-backed Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which state that drastic, “now or never” measures must be taken in relation to climate change in order to avoid a climate catastrophe.
