According to two-thirds of Hungarians, lifestyle changes are necessary due to climate change
According to a new survey conducted by the European Investment Bank (EIB), nearly two-thirds of Hungarians admit that they will have to change their lifestyle due to climate change. The research shows that the majority of the Hungarian population considers adaptation to the challenges of climate change important and urges the government to treat climate protection measures as a priority.
In the EBB’s survey, EU and American participants were questioned, 1,008 people in Hungary answered the questions in August 2024. According to the research, 95 percent of Hungarian respondents support the country’s adaptation to climate change, and 46 percent of them consider it extremely important that this issue be given priority. According to 86 percent of those surveyed, money should be spent on adaptation steps immediately, so that larger costs can be avoided later.
64 percent of Hungarians feel that they will have to change their lifestyle due to climate change, while 33 percent would even move to a place where they are less threatened by natural disasters, such as floods or forest fires. And 29 percent of respondents would move to a colder region to avoid the effects of climate change.
The heat wave in August this year, during which the temperature reached 40 degrees Celsius in some places, reminded the country of the urgent consequences of climate change. The extreme heat and drought caused significant damage to agriculture and drew even more attention to the need for adaptation.
