The Hungarian presidency stands for farmer-centered EU agricultural policy
The interests of farmers must be put back at the center of EU agricultural policy. In recent years, the decision-makers in Brussels seem to have lost sight of this, István Nagy said on Thursday at the Congress of European Farmers in Bucharest, where he presented the objectives and achievements of the Hungarian EU presidency.
At the event, the minister of agriculture emphasized that, seeing the situation, the Hungarian presidency decided to raise the farmer-centered greyhound policy to one of its most important priorities. The goal of the Hungarian presidency is to promote competitive, crisis-resistant, sustainable, farmer-friendly and knowledge-based European agriculture.
According to the head of the ministry, the existing crisis management measures must be improved in order to be able to respond to crisis situations more quickly and efficiently. István Nagy does not consider it acceptable that in many cases farmers only receive the rightful compensation after many months have passed after the damage event has been reported.
I believe that we cannot be competitive without the support of innovative investments – underlined István Nagy, who added that to improve competitiveness it is essential to guarantee the income security of farmers, in which basic support must play a prominent role.
