Bird flu and the price of chicken
The Agricultural Research Institute (AKI) prepared a survey about the effects of last year’s bird flu outbreak on the number of chicken and chicken prices. The publication by KSH and AKI makes useful reading before making even short-term business decisions. Hungarian chicken population had been growing till 2003, but started to shrink afterwards. The total number fell by 17,1 per cent (9,1 million) between 2003 and 2006, which has resulted in growing prices. Domestic chicken stocks have not been effected seriously by the outbreak of bird flu, with only 90 thousand being destroyed.
