Luxury can be green too – Budapest hotels saved 6,000 kg of food through the Munch app
12 hotels across the country have joined the Munch food saving platform: currently 10 hotels in Budapest and 2 in the countryside are participating in the anti-waste initiative. The capital’s hotels have saved a total of 6,000 kg of food, equivalent to 4,000 laptops.
Sustainability is our common interest
According to a 2018 study, hotels produce 79,000 tons of food waste annually, accounting for 10% of food waste in the retail sector worldwide.1
Sustainability is now not just a buzzword, but a real consumer and social demand. Increasingly, hotels are being asked to take environmentally conscious, green steps to contribute to sustainability while maintaining their elegant, luxurious services. Food rescue is an opportunity where hotels can contribute to sustainability almost unnoticed: by selling leftovers from the breakfast buffet or the daily menu through Munch, they can save energy and money.
The secret to the popularity of hotel munch
Hotel breakfasts and menus are particularly popular among food rescuers. It is worth taking advantage of the available packages immediately, as they usually find a buyer within a few minutes. The secret to the huge demand lies in the delicious flavors and the high-quality service typical of hotels. When receiving the munch, we can feel like hotel guests for a bit, as the elegant interiors and extremely polite, kind staff bring a sense of luxury into our day.
The biggest names have joined in
In addition to Hilton, other prestigious Budapest hotels can also be found on Munch: Hotel Oktogon, Hotel Nemzeti, Hotel Moments, Netizen Hotel, Hotel President, Diamond Hill Hotel&Restaurant, Alta Moda Fashion Hotel and Hotel Vision are also participating in the food rescue. Their surprise packages contain everything you need for a perfect breakfast: sweet and savory pastries, cold cuts, vegetables and many other tasty surprises await hotel munchers.
However, the most popular hotel was not in the capital, but in Eger: the Minaret Hotel and Restaurant in Eger saved the most munchies from waste. The second most popular is Hotel President, and the third place is Hotel Moments.
