Lidl Hungary also works for the success of domestic wineries
Lidl Hungary contributed approximately HUF 17.5 billion to the domestic and international success of the Hungarian wine sector in 2024, and over the past ten years, more than HUF 90 billion. This clearly demonstrates the company’s commitment to supporting Hungarian producers and strengthening the market position of domestic wines, while also dynamically responding to consumer trends.
Lidl is committed to supporting domestic wineries by developing sales opportunities in both domestic and international markets. The company’s goal is to help domestic wineries succeed not only in the domestic market, but also internationally, for which purpose the discount chain launched the “Lidl for Hungarian Suppliers!” program in 2013, and then the “Lidl Wine Expo Hungary” event series a year later. As a result, it can be said that domestic wineries, with the help of the market-leading supermarket chain, have sold nearly 235 million bottles of Hungarian wine both at home and abroad over the past decade, nearly half of which found a buyer abroad, thus supporting the growth of the international recognition of Hungarian wine culture.
Cooperation with domestic wineries
“Our goal is for customers to find wines from all domestic wine regions on store shelves. We work closely with renowned wineries, as well as smaller family and artisanal wineries, and we actively support them in development and product development in addition to sales. In 2024, we contributed to the sale of nearly 29 million bottles of Hungarian wine on domestic and foreign markets. Thus, customers can pick up the deservedly famous Hungarian wines from the shelves of Lidl stores not only at home, but also in 14 other European countries, which means further development for wineries,”
– said Judit Tőzsér, the company’s head of communications.
Stable demand, changing trends
The chain’s turnover from wine and sparkling wines has shown stable growth over the past year and a half, thanks to the expansion of the product range and rapid adaptation to consumer trends. There has been a clear increase in consumer interest in light, aromatic wines, as well as sparkling wines, sparkling wines and wine-based cocktails. The demand for red wines has decreased internationally, but there is still a stable audience for wines with character like Egri Bikavér.
