Lidl strengthens its international commitment to conscious nutrition with WWF
Lidl is further strengthening its commitment to conscious nutrition by aligning its product range even more closely with the Planetary Health Diet (PHD)[1] by 2050. By 2030, Lidl will increase the proportion of plant-based foods sold in its product range, such as plant-based protein sources, whole grains, fruit and vegetables, by 20% compared to 2023. Lidl is the first retailer to make all food categories in its product range transparent in all 31 countries where it has stores, using the WWF methodology. Lidl is thus helping its customers make more environmentally conscious and healthier choices.
To address global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss and diet-related diseases, we need to transform our food system[2]. Recognizing these pressing issues and its responsibility, Lidl is contributing to the transformation of the global food system by setting ambitious goals across its entire value chain. Customers will retain the freedom to choose products, but will be able to make more sustainable purchasing decisions more easily. To this end, Lidl, with the support of WWF’s expertise, is further strengthening its commitment to the goals of the Conscious Nutrition strategy in all 31 countries where it has stores. Lidl is expanding its current measures for plant-based proteins and setting ambitious goals in all three health-promoting categories of the Planetary Healthy Diet (PHD)[3].
Conscious nutrition as a driver for health and nature protection
“In order for the growing world population to be able to eat healthily without overloading our planet, transforming the global food system is key,”
said Judit Tőzsér, Head of Corporate Communications at Lidl Hungary. Lidl has been committed to contributing to this goal for years based on the scientific theory of the Planetary Health Diet. Together with WWF as our experienced partner, we want to achieve even greater impact in the future and offer our customers an ever-expanding range of more sustainable products that fit well into a healthier diet at the usual affordable prices.”
Mariella Meyer, WWF Switzerland, adds: “We are delighted that Lidl has joined the Planetary Health Diet and is implementing the WWF Planetary Health Retail Model[4]. This is a crucial step in transforming the food system, as the current global food system is the number one cause of the destruction of wildlife and nature. By increasing the proportion of plant-based protein sources in its product range, Lidl is putting the health of people and the planet first. We hope this will encourage other retailers to follow Lidl’s example and place more emphasis on plant-based products over animal-based products.”
