According to a study, three quarters of the population will return every bottle with a deposit fee
On the whole, Hungarians welcome the introduction of the new bottle redemption system, three quarters of the population will try to redeem all bottles with a deposit fee – according to research by Reacty Digital. The Association of Responsible Food Manufacturers stated that the manufacturers would like to ensure that the government does not cause additional cost increases for them by further increasing the fees, which are considered high even at the European level, because this may also be reflected in the prices.
It was announced: 84 percent of the Hungarian population has heard that from January 1, 2024, a mandatory redemption system for domestically marketed deposit-fee products will also be introduced in Hungary. 45 percent of the population would only return bottles in the immediate vicinity of their place of residence, 40 percent within a comfortable walking distance, and in the case of greater distances, they would rather throw them in the mixed waste. Among the available options for redemption, a third of the population would prefer the voucher, which can be exchanged for cash at the point of redemption or credited to the amount of the purchase. It is also important to note, however, that half of the population would be most happy with cash instead of the redemption fees that come into effect on January 1, they wrote.
Three-quarters of those who have at least heard of the new redemption system consider it a useful and environmentally friendly measure. Half of them feel it is effective, but the same number of them doubt whether people will handle waste collection more consciously as a result of the system.
