Foreigners drive domestic tourism
The sector still looks extremely positive, but at the same time, based on the latest data, a duality emerges: in July, 11% more foreigners arrived in Hungary, but the number of domestic guests decreased by 0.5% compared to the same period last year.
Overall, the number of guest nights increased by 2% on a year-on-year basis. Based on the first seven months, the performance of the sector is also positive, as between January and July, tourist accommodations were able to record a 6% increase in guest nights. By 2024, we expect a return to pre-pandemic travel traffic, i.e. the number of guest nights in 2024 may exceed last year’s level by approximately 10%. This is supported by the increase in real wages, the normalization of inflation, the improvement of consumer confidence, and the significant increase in the number of foreign guests.
The defining processes of tourism:
- Domestic tourism continued to strengthen: in July 2024, a total of 2.4 million guests spent 6.6 million guest nights at tourist accommodations. The number of guests was 4.1, and the number of guest nights was 2.0% higher than a year earlier.
Of this, the number of domestic guests decreased by 0.5%, and the number of guest nights was 0.3% lower than in the same month of the previous year. - However, the number of foreign guests and guest nights continued to rise: the number of foreign guests was 11, and the number of guest nights spent by them increased by 5.4% compared to the same month of the previous year.
