The average price of light and heavy lamb also increased by more than 30 percent
According to European Commission data, the European Union’s sheep and goat imports (live animals and meat) were 112.5 thousand tonnes in January-August 2024, a 5 percent decrease compared to the same period of the previous year. The largest suppliers were the United Kingdom and New Zealand, with a combined share of 93 percent.
The volume of sheep and goat meat and live animals sold on the international market (62.5 thousand tonnes) decreased by 13 percent compared to January-August 2023. The largest target markets were Morocco (18 percent share), Jordan (17.6 percent) and the United Kingdom (17.4 percent). While the volume delivered to Jordan decreased by 30 percent and that to the United Kingdom by 14 percent, exports to Morocco almost tripled. In the European Union, the price of light lamb was 14.8 percent higher in the first forty-seven weeks of 2024 compared to the same period of the previous year. The price of heavy lamb increased by 14.3 percent.

According to KSH data, the volume of Hungary’s live lamb exports increased by 5 percent (8.8 thousand tons) and the value by 21 percent (to HUF 17 billion) in January-September 2024 compared to a year earlier. According to AKI PÁIR data, the producer price of light and heavy lamb in Hungary increased in January-October 2024 compared to the average price in the same months of 2023: the average price of light lamb was HUF 2,099/kilogram (+32 percent), and that of heavy lamb was HUF 2,015/kilogram (+36 percent).
