Coca-Cola Hungary has developed new educational modules on waste circulation
After the online curriculum on the basics of the circular economy and the cycle of water and energy, educational modules showing the cycle of waste have also become available on Coca-Cola Hungary’s #énvětsom platform. The two new modules just published: The global problem of waste and Waste management in Hungary raise the quantitative and qualitative issues of waste, provide a historical overview of domestic waste management, cover the economic and environmental benefits of proper waste management, present the recently introduced redemption system, and useful practical advice regarding selective waste collection. Similar to the previous materials, these modules were also compiled by Pannon University lecturers for the #énvæstöm program.
One of the world’s biggest environmental challenges is proper waste management. While in the time before the industrial revolution, humanity hardly produced any significant waste, in the last one hundred and fifty years the storage, destruction and recycling of industrial and household waste has emerged as one of the number one global problems. It is enough to think of the polluted rivers well-known from the news, the mountains of waste towering in urban landfills, or the garbage island in the Pacific Ocean, to see that the world must solve the issue of waste management as soon as possible in the most sustainable way. In Hungary alone, we produce more than 400 kg of waste per person every year, most of which we do not reuse for the time being.
The solution to this worldwide problem is complex: we must not only reuse and recycle products and packaging materials that have already been manufactured in accordance with the principle of circularity, but also strive to prevent and reduce waste production. In addition to showing what we can do at the individual level in order to cause the smallest possible environmental impact with our consumption, the modules just published also introduce the principle and practical issues of selective waste collection. In addition, interested parties are provided with useful information about industrial, community and backyard composting, and the operation of the recently introduced redemption system is discussed in detail.
Coca-Cola Hungary is committed to sustainability and conscious consumption, which is why in 2023 it embarked on the development of an online educational series dealing with the circular economy. Along with the current modules, the #énvæstöm program deals with the principle of circularity and sustainability in six online, free study materials, providing registrants with comprehensible theoretical knowledge and useful practical advice. The University of Pannon was a partner of the #énvæstöm program in curriculum development.
