Local products must play a prominent role
With local products, the transportation route of food can be reduced, and the producer, the processor and the consumer are not only physically “close” to each other, but a relationship of trust also develops between them.
By buying local products, we can also help local producers and food processors. The short supply chain (REL) and its forms of sale shed light on how the transport route of food can be reduced and how it is possible to bring production, processing and sale, as well as the consumer, as close as possible to each other.
The National Chamber of Agriculture (NAK) and the Hungarian National Rural Network (MNVH) held a “Local Product” event in eight cities
After the four in the spring, four more locations will be held in October, with the cooperation of the Ministry of Agriculture, the National Food Chain Safety Office and the Kislépték Association. The presentations of the event series also pointed out the need to increase the production of locally produced products and the sale of the producers’ products through short supply chains, be it through regional, community sales, or well-functioning regional markets. Hungarian farmers produce quality food all over the country, the goal is to offer and consume mainly domestic food. Local producers contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage, promote Hungarian flavors, provide raw materials for Hungarian gastronomy, and consumers have a way to build a personal relationship with them. By purchasing local products, we can help rural producers get to the market quickly, the livelihood of the rural population and ensure the sustainability of the countryside.
The lectures given at the events covered the topics of the Local Product Handbook published last year, focusing on the topics of its chapters
Among other things, there was talk about the peculiarities of the food economy and its development opportunities, the reformed food chains and food processing. Furthermore, about innovative solutions, trends and tools that can help local product producers to develop or expand their sales opportunities. At the events, interested parties could learn about many local good practices and local product producers. The opening event took place on April 25 in Budapest, followed by Pannonhalma, Paks and Hajdúböszörmény as locations in the spring. The autumn programs were hosted by Pécs, Zalaegerszeg, Nyíregyháza and Szolnok. In connection with the spring events, the NAK has collected several exemplary farms, good practices, and answers to current questions in a publication.
