Heinz carbonara comes canned, Italian chefs are scandalized
The American Heinz caused a public outcry in Italy when it announced that it would launch canned carbonara in Great Britain in the fall, Vice reported. According to the company, the product aimed at generation Z will conquer customers with the simplicity and fantastic taste of the world-famous carbonara. However, the Italians do not see it that way.
Alessandro Pipero, a chef at a Michelin-starred restaurant in Rome, compared canned carbonara to cat food, while chef and TV personality Gianfranco Vissani said Heinz should be ashamed of itself for offending Italian culture and gastronomy. There was also a strong reaction on social media; many are hoping that the product is just a bad joke and won’t actually hit store shelves. One user ironically put it this way: “Forgive them, Lord, for they know not what they do.”
Alessandra de Dreuille, Head of Heinz Ready Meals, said that canned carbonara is the perfect, fatigue-free choice at the end of a long day watching a series with friends. However, it seems that Heinz’s innovation has not yet won the favor of the Italians, who regard carbonara as their national treasure and would not entrust its preparation to a can.
