Budapest, November 29th, 2011. – Heineken set upon the task of becoming the greenest beer brewer in the world. In order to achieve its goal, in April 2010, Heineken Hungary announced its integrated sustainability strategy called Brewing a Better Future. The strategy’s high standards, its practicality and the already achieved results were appraised by the judges of the CSR Hungary Award and it won first place in the enterprise category.

Heineken Hungary is dedicated towards environmentally conscious thinking. It pays attention to its impact on the environments, though it launched its Brewing a Better Future program in 2010. The strategy determines the sustainability plans for the next 10 years, with the goal of making Heineken the most environmentally friendly beer brewing company by 2020.

The company is making significant and long-term investments in order to realize its goal. To reach a more sustainable future, its energy and its activities are divided into three sections: development, by continuously improving the environmental effects of its brands; support, by supporting its employees and the communities where Heineken is established; and the positive effects of the role beer plays in society.

Basis of the Brewing a Better Future Program

All components of the program are set to practice. For instance, it was previously a practice to wash empty cans before and after refilling with fresh water. Currently, fresh water is used to clean the inside of cans before filling and the same water is collected and used to wash the outside of cans after filling. By doing so, more than 400 m3 of water is saved by Heineken each year.
’Brewing a Better Future is an extremely important mission for all of us. We would like to become the greenest brewer in the country and we are prepared to do anything to achieve this goal. It fills us with great joy and honor to be appraised by the profession. The CSR Hungary Award confirms that we are on the right path.’– said Ajayi Oladele, General Manager of Heineken Hungary.
