In addition to traditional flavors, more and more special flavors of szaloncukor are diversifying the range
From traditional flavors to candies made with special fruits and spices, consumers can choose from an extremely wide range of products this year. According to the overview of the National Chamber of Agriculture and the Association of Hungarian Confectionery Manufacturers, the latest trend is the combination of spicy and sweet flavors, but in terms of quantity, jelly candies are still the most consumed.
Christmas is unimaginable without candies, this is the candy that crowns the holiday in the Carpathian Basin. Although candies originally came to our country from abroad, they differ so much from their previous form that we can rightly consider them Hungarian. The paper-wrapped candy, originally made of fondant, i.e. sugar syrup, reached Hungary through German mediation and became popular at the end of the 19th century. Due to our common history, candies are a traditional decoration for the Christmas tree in Slovakia and Romania as well as in our country.
According to the National Chamber of Agriculture and the Hungarian Confectionery Manufacturers Association, the product has not lost its popularity in the past century and a half, and is even taking up an increasingly large share of the Christmas candy supply. Hungarian consumers buy almost 3,500 tons of candy annually – the average is one kilogram per household – and sales are increasing from season to season.
According to the manufacturers’ experience, tradition and innovation can coexist nicely. Jelly szaloncukor remains the favorite of most people, but in addition to marzipan, coconut, caramel and chocolate cream, more and more special candy is now available. Traditional flavors attract those who are looking for well-known, comforting flavors that are linked to cultural heritage or childhood memories, such as jelly candy. Innovative sweets that use unique flavor combinations or modern techniques are appreciated by those who want to try new and exciting things.
