The producer price of Golden apples increased by 24 percent
According to the publication of the Agrárközgazdasági Intézet Informative report on autumn agricultural works, in 2023 the planned area for apples was 20.5 thousand hectares, of which 96.8 percent, 19.9 thousand hectares, were harvested by November 12. According to the report, 472.5 thousand tons of apples were harvested in 2023, which is a significantly larger amount than the record low harvest of 2022 (KSH: 350 thousand tons).
According to KSH data, the foreign trade balance of table apples intended for fresh consumption was negative in the first nine months of 2023: imports increased by 66 percent to 21.4 thousand tons, and exports by 26 percent to 15.1 thousand tons. Imports of industrial apples decreased by 58 percent to 1.92 thousand tons, and exports by 31 percent to 1.35 thousand tons. According to AKI PÁIR data, the producer price of apples on the Budapest Wholesale Market rose by 11 percent to HUF 333/kilogram in the first 50 weeks of 2023 compared to the previous year. Among the apple varieties harvested in 2023, the producer price of Jonathan increased by 13 percent (HUF 287/kilogram), Idar’s by 16 percent (HUF 311/kilogram), and Golden’s by 24 percent (HUF 366/kilogram) between September and December 2023 compared to the average price of the same period of the previous year.
According to AKI PÁIR data, the average purchase price of industrial apples in the 2023 harvest season (August–November) was HUF 48.6 thousand/ton, which is 6 percent higher compared to the average price for the same period in 2022.
