Farmers can overcome difficulties through continuous adaptation
The increase in the price of energy carriers and fertilizer, as well as the duty-free nature of Ukrainian agricultural products, have radically worsened the conditions for growing crops, so “the war is pressing us from two sides,” said the state secretary for agriculture and rural development of the Ministry of Agriculture (AM) at the opening of the 36th Babolna Farmers’ Days on Thursday.
Zsolt Feldman added that Hungary shares a common destiny with Bulgaria, Poland, Romania and Slovakia, because the situation is the same in these states. In Brussels, despite continuous signals for several months, they did not want to admit that tens of millions of tons of Ukrainian produce arrived on the European Union market duty-free, causing serious sales disruptions in the agriculture of these countries, the state secretary pointed out. He added that it was thanks to the cooperation of the five states that these states were able to introduce temporary import restrictions. I would like to achieve the extension of the ban and the introduction of transit subsidies, which will make the rail transportation of Ukrainian grain to their traditional markets competitive.
The state secretary said that if joint action does not lead to results, Hungary is ready to order the ban on a national legal basis
Zsolt Feldman stated that in the long term, even in the absence of Hungarian agreement, the presence of Ukrainian agricultural products on the European market must be counted on, and this will change the peaceful processes of the past decade. Farmers also have to adapt to the changed conditions, and the Ministry of Agriculture provides all the help they need to stay afloat. At the opening of the Bábolna Farmers’ Days, IKR Agrár Kft. received the Minister of Agriculture’s special award from Zsolt Feldman. Gábor Haál, director of the Bábolna National Stud Farm, said that this year, the fair awaits visitors on 20,000 square meters with 150 exhibitors, with 15 machine connections to present the latest power and work machine developments. On the vocational school day, the organizers address students in secondary agricultural education, they expect a thousand students from 25 schools. The students take part in a guided program and can try the most modern tractors on a test drive.
