Protecting farmers’ interests is a guarantee of food security
Hungary pays special attention to protecting farmers’ interests and water conservation. The central theme of the 18th World Forum on Food and Agriculture (GFFA) was water management. More than seventy countries and twelve international organizations participated in the international event.
The participants of the event, organized by the German Federal Ministry for Food and Agriculture, drew attention to the role of water in sustainable agriculture, with particular regard to the challenges caused by climate change and the issue of food security. Our country is committed to the fact that adaptation to water is the key to the future of agriculture. In this spirit, the “Water into the Landscape” initiative was launched in 2025, within the framework of which more than one billion cubic meters of water have been retained and stored in the recent period, primarily for preventive purposes.
The program contributes to reducing drought risk and strengthening production security
In addition, the importance of wetlands and natural solutions is also of paramount importance, which simultaneously serve to retain water, improve the conditions of agricultural production and increase the resilience of rural areas. The government supports their implementation with targeted support. Sustainability goals can only be credible if international trade policy decisions – such as the EU-Mercosur agreement and Ukrainian agricultural imports – do not disadvantage European and Hungarian producers. The joint statement adopted at the end of the forum, which also serves to prepare for the 2026 UN Water Conference, helps strengthen the resilience of agriculture, emphasizes the central role of water and the importance of food security. Hungary remains committed to raising awareness in international forums about protecting the interests and competitiveness of farmers.
