Ferrero Achieves 90% Ingredient Traceability
Ferrero Group has reported significant progress in its sustainability journey, driven by a commitment to positive impact across its value chain, according to its recently released 16th Sustainability Report.
Key achievements include mapping over 90% of key ingredients to their origin, including 97% traceability for cocoa and palm oil and 94% for hazelnuts, thanks to partnerships with Sourcemap and Starling.
Strong progress has been made towards its goal of halving greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 compared to the 2017/18 baseline, with a 21.7% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions, the confectionery giant noted.
Ninety percent of electricity for manufacturing and warehousing now comes from renewable sources, it added.
Ferrero continues to prioritise packaging sustainability, with 92.1% recyclable packaging.
The group has also minimised virgin plastic use, with a 13% reduction in the plastic-to-product ratio.
Key initiatives include switching Ferrero Rocher boxes to polypropylene, saving around 11,000 tonnes of plastic, launching Nutella Plant-Based in 60% recycled glass jars, and introducing the Kinder Joy paper spoon.
The report also highlights Ferrero’s commitment to food safety, with 100% of plants achieving GFSI certification.
Additionally, it underscores responsible consumption, with most of its products offering controlled serving sizes: 85% contain 130 kcal or less, and 63% are below 100 kcal per serving.
‘Business Resilience’
Giovanni Ferrero, executive chair of the Ferrero Group, commented, “Sustainability is deeply embedded in Ferrero’s long-term strategy. It’s a fundamental driver of business resilience and shapes the decisions we make, as we grow responsibly. In the face of global challenges, particularly climate change, our commitment remains clear: to source responsibly, innovate boldly, and safeguard the natural world for future generations.
“This progress is made possible by embracing collective action, leveraging innovation, research and development, and continuously learning from experience to deliver measurable, meaningful impact.”
Lapo Civiletti, CEO of Ferrero Group, added, “We made steady progress on our sustainability agenda during fiscal year 2023/2024. I am particularly proud of the ongoing steps we are taking to achieve our long-term commitments. We have successfully advanced our sustainability journey while maintaining strong financial stewardship across the company.
“We are making great efforts on the traceability of our key ingredients and improving supply chain visibility, while advancing our commitments to promoting human rights and continuing our work on decarbonisation across the business.
