Mórahalom has won one of the world’s most significant sustainable tourism awards, the Best Tourism Villages title – the municipality informed MTI.

The announcement quoted Mayor Zoltán Nógrádi (Fidesz-KDNP), who emphasized: “the recognition is not only for the city’s natural and cultural treasures, but also praises the dedicated work of all the people living here“.

The Best Tourism Villages qualification was established by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), to recognize those settlements that set an outstanding example in sustainable tourism. Only a few settlements are included in the award every year, those that both preserve their traditions and show new paths towards the future. In 2023, Tokaj represented Hungary among the best in the world and won the prestigious title. Now Mórahalom will continue this international success, giving new inspiration to other communities.

The global award for sustainable tourism is awarded based on a strict evaluation of nine aspects. The jury examined how the settlement promotes its cultural and natural values, how it protects its heritage, and how it operates sustainably from an economic, social and environmental perspective. Tourism development, cooperation between local actors, as well as conscious management and long-term strategic thinking played an important role. The assessment also covered infrastructure, accessibility, and ensuring the health, safety and protection of guests and locals.

Located in the heart of the Homokhátság, the southern Great Plain city boasts unparalleled natural values: the medicinal thermal water, the proximity of the Kiskunság National Park, the Nagyszéksós Buffalo Reserve and the protected meadows located on the characteristic saline meadows are all treasures that attract nature lovers here.
