Sustainable operations are no longer just the passion of large corporations
Sustainable development is not only the responsibility of companies and civil society organizations, but also of local leaders. Local governments are in a unique position, as they are able to coordinate the initiatives of the population and local businesses locally. Recognizing the exemplary role of sustainably operating local governments, K&H is re-announcing the K&H Award for Sustainable Local Governments this year, which rewards outstanding environmental and social programs of local governments and the organizations and companies they operate. The winners of the competition will receive a grant of 3 million forints per municipality, and applications can be submitted until November 3, 2025.
Although people usually think of residential and corporate responsibility when it comes to sustainability, the activities of local governments are also decisive.
“The leaders of the municipalities know the local conditions and problems best, and are able to create collaborations that create real value and bring practical change in everyday life. The purpose of the award is twofold: we consider it important to draw attention to these initiatives, as others can learn and develop by drawing ideas from best practices. On the other hand, as a financial institution at the forefront of sustainable operations, we would like to recognize the efforts of pioneers so that they can be proud of their exemplary activities”
– he emphasized Levente Suba, K&H’s Sustainability Manager.
K&H also pays special attention to reducing environmental impact and responsible financial practices in its own operations, including the integration of ESG considerations into lending and investments. All municipalities, local budget bodies and municipally-owned companies registered in Hungary can apply for the award in two categories: environmental performance of the year and social performance of the year. In both categories, three winners are selected for each settlement type – municipality, city, county town/capital and its districts. Submissions are required for presentation of already implemented and planned sustainability projects.
